Castro v. Beecher decision finds the Boston Police Department examination discriminates against minorities.

November 30, 1971

(Nov.) U.S. District Court judge Charles Wyzanski’s ruling is upheld by the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1972. As a remedy, Wyzanksi orders qualified minorities to be hired on a one-to-one basis along with qualified whites on April 15, 1973. After the number of minority officers reaches some 25%, the order is rescinded in 2004.
